I’m slowing getting all of my stuff moved over to my shiny new server (SuperServer 5015M-MT, 3ghz Pentium D, 2GB RAM). I’ve taken this as an opportunity to finally upgrade to WordPress 2.x and clear out the 2,931 bogus comments that I had sitting in the moderation queue (I had to temporarily increase php’s memory limit just so it could load the page!). This new version has some anti-spam stuff, so we’ll see how that works.

I’m borrowing someone else’s wordpress theme right now until I have time to put my own thing together, and to those of you that have been complaining, I promise that I’ll actually start blogging about things soon.

I spent a little bit of time today and got my documentation system running again. I also updated it with the very latest GTK# 2.7.1 and Mono 1.1.10 class library documentation.

Announcing: http://docs.gotmono.net/ !

Thanks to the AJAX.net library, you will never see the entire page reload, yet the contents tree will always stay in sync with what you are looking at. I have also implemented a live index search making it extremely quick and easy to find what you are looking for.

I find it amusing that my very first javascript project is several magnitudes better than what Microsoft managed to scrap together, which only works properly when used with Internet Explorer.

I have tested the site in Firefox, Opera, and Internet Explorer, and other than IE’s usual CSS problems (and it looks like some of which might already be fixed in IE7), it works almost perfectly in every one.

Please let me know if you find any bugs or have any suggestions…or even if you just find it useful! If there is an open-source mono library you would like to see added to the site let me know about that as well.

UPDATE: It looks like the site was erroring a bit… its working now.

I finally got so sick of dealing with bBlog’s lack of, well, anything that didn’t completely suck so I moved over to WordPress. Yeah, it’s not asp.net but everyone who I’ve talked to has liked it very much and I can see why. It’s simple, has tons of features, and at this point “just works”.

You also more than likely have noticed that the URL has changed from http://extremeboredom.net/ to http://eric.extremeboredom.net/. This is because I have other (exciting!) plans for extremeboredom.net, so please update your bookmarks, RSS readers, and stay tuned.

A technical note about the migration, I imported all of my posts over using the RSS importer that wordpress comes with. As for all the comments I ended up just writing a quick program that took the XML output from a query against bBlog’s comments table using MySQL Query Browser and inserted them using the correct format into the WordPress database. Code will be avaliable as soon as I finish moving domains around. If you are interested post a reply and I’ll be sure to make sure you are notified.

I’m still not quite done migrating the template/stylesheet over, so if you happen to come across any visual goofs please let me know.

I got really sick of trying to maintain a photo gallery. Having to manually upload photos, catagorize them, set names, etc. is a big pain. All I wanted was to drag my photos over to my server using nautilus and have them be accessible to the web, and obviously mod_autoindex wasn’t quite sufficiant.

So rather than just complain on my blog about it, I wrote a solution: QuickThumbs.

QuickThumbs is a zero-configuration image gallery powered by asp.net. You just extract about 4 files to your photo directory, set mod_mono/xsp to treat that directory as it’s own application, and it does the rest.

I’ts still not quite done, it needs to generate smaller versions of images and support EXTIF, but it’s already fairly useful. You can see it in action here (Yes, I ripped the layout/style from another gallery, I wasn’t in a very creative mood and couldn’t come up with anything very pretty on my own). Also note this is currently completly untested in IE, but it works great in Firefox.

I used Template4DotNet so it’s really easy to create custom layouts and styles. This is a very cool piece of code, if you ever need to implement a very basic template system in your asp.net app, its the way to go.

I’ve even started working on a spiffy website for it. It’s not quite done yet either though.

I’ll have a link to download it very soon, let me know if any of this sounds interesting to you!

I’ve decided to create a new section on here for World News, where I can rant about the mess Bush has left the country in, as well as anything else going on in the world. One note, I’ve updated my post regarding the possiblity of a draft with some new information reflecting recent press, so check that out.

The USGS issued a Volcano Advisory and raised the alert level (I wonder who canned that term first, them or DHS) for Mt. St. Helens to 2 of 4, regardless of Komo 4 (local ABC affiliate) and perhaps other “reliable” news sources reporting it at level 3. The USGS claims a small erruption could occur in the next few days, but it would be localized and not pose any threat to any major cities.

Remember kids: Duck, and cover.

Update – 2004/09/30
It seems KOMO finally fixed their article to reflect the correct alert level.
