Kanye West on NBC Hurricane Relief Special

Last night my mom had the TV on to NBC’s Hurricane relief concert, and I happened to walk itno the room just as Mike Meyers and someone I had never seen before (after searching Technorati I found that this was Kanye West apparently) were talking.

Kanye, who didnt take a single breath during his entire rant and looked like he was going to pass out, was ranting on about the media being racist.

I hate the way they portray us in the meia. When you see a black family, it says they’re looting. You see a white family, it says they’re looking for food. And you know, it’s been five days because most of the people are black. And even for me to complain about it, I would be a hypocrite because I’ve tried to turn away from the teacher… TV because it’s too hard to watch. I’ve even been shopping before even giving a donation so now I’m calling my business manager right now to see what’s… what is the biggest ammount I can give. And… and just to imagine, if I was… if I was down there and those are… those are my people down there, so anybody out there that wants to do anything that we can help with the… with the setup the way America is set up to help the uh… uh the poor, the black people, the uh… the less well-off as slow as possible. I mean this is… The Red Cross is doing everything they can. We… we already realize a lot of the people that could help are at war right now fighting another way, and they… they… they’ve given them permission to go down and shoot us.

(That’s a fairly accurate transcription of what he said, you couldnt understand him any better on TV)

While there might be some truth in what he was saying, intentional or unintentional, this has no place in a national fundraiser. The goal of this special show was to raise money to help the victims of a horrible disaster, politics should have been left at the door. Both he and NBC should be ashamed for allowing this to happen, who knows how many people turned the TV off after that.

Also, for those of you reading this on monologue, I promise to blog about mono-related things again soon. Hopefuly I will be able to report meshwork progress (rather than failure) sometime later this weekend.

  1. You are a fuckin idiotic racist piece of shit do you not comprehend the fuckin heartbreak and trauma these BLACK people are going through and Kanye West..someone you have not heard of before tells it all.. this man is famous all around and you have never heard of him im sure your mother was one of the people who turned off the television after he said that you haven’t heard of him because hes black thats why and im sure of it.. what did you donate to these people, besides offensive comments towards them while you’re sitting at home eating dinner mommy made you while these people are starving… FUCK THAT PIECE OF SHIT PRESIDENT IF THATS WHAT HE WANTS TO BE CALLED, WORST IN HISTORY IN MANY PEOPLES OPINIONS.. HAVE A GREAT DAY SON!!

  2. As sad as this series of tragedies is, West has the right idea. This tragedy has exploited an administration that now openly f***s minorities….maybe now minorities will colaborate and rise against such an exclusive administration.

  3. kanye west is a hypocrite, his song “diamonds” is all about the inhumane treatment of workers in africa…. the problem is, he wears a lot of “bling”… anyone else see the irony? i cant stand kanye west.. his rap sucks and he can hardly talk, i am glad he said bush sucks on national tv, but he really isn’t helping the cause, he sounded about as ignorant as george w. bush, maybe he was nervous, but he still sounded like a chump.

  4. emotions got the best of him…and you forgot to mention he said W doesn’t care about black people. I respect him for being blunt

  5. To me the comments of this person are far more important than the fundraising show. He is pointing to the right problem, that is that your governements is prepared to spend billions on warfare making a few riches even richer but unable to spend money nor organize help for the poor. The only solution it has foor poor people is shooting them.
You need a govenement that takes action before the disaster takes place and that takes care of the wounded and homeless after the disaster. I live far away ( Belgium ) but I do have a strong impression that your governement has activly refused to prepare for such events. I think there are already enough funds and infrastructure in the army to take action but your governement has reserved it to serve in the rich man’s war.
You should not do charity, you need revolution.

  6. Imagine that - a yank-bashing Belgian. How… original.

  7. Probably I am not original ( if that matters ..) . I just hope to get some response on how Americans think they will thread important questions for them and for US ( the rest of the world ).
I feel that there is little response to the inhuman acts of the US government by the Americans themselfs ( maybe I’m wrong ). I think that charity is the continuation of the current government policy. It hides the offcial’s responsability. If you are calling to kill the critics ( “wire his mouth shut” ) you are becomming partly responsible for the crimes your government commits.

  8. Last addition:

This is no flaming against you personally. I just found your blog because I’m intrested in mono. I really don’t want to offend you. I am also worried about the innocent people there lives and what will happen to us.
Today they do not have the army to save there own people BUT prepare yourselfs for the next mission the gangsters ruling the US are preparing:
    http://www.vheadline.com/readnews.asp?id=45795

  9. IM and Joris, please do not confuse the Bush administration with the rest of us Americans. Our government …as can be seen by the divided country right now, has very little to do with the popular voice. Right now you can voice all of your opinions on what should or could be done abroad on a few people, not a country…that is until we boot the regime out!

  10. Criticism has its time and place. The point I was trying to make was not that I think it should be censored, but that I think a national fundraiser is the absolute wrong place for it. A fundraiser should be completely impartial and unbiased with the sole purpose of helping people. It should not be a forum for anyone to tell the world what *they* think.

  11. “Not Racist” - You are a sad, sad, sick man if you are so blind to think that I would have thought any different if Kanye West was a white pop star, and not a black rapper. If anyone here is being racist, it’s you. I judge people by their actions, not by their color. If a city has 500 criminals and 450 of them are black, saying “Most of the criminals here are black” isnt racist, its fact. Don’t let racism confuse you.

  12. .. Now lets think about what Mr West said the other night.. he was ranting about ((:his people:)) and how we the american people see Blacks as looters, rapist, ect.. I ask Mr West, “What about the protrayal of “your people” in those rap videos you and your cronies make. I see “drug dealers, I see violence, I see brothas protrayed as hoodlums, hood rats, trouble makers ect… I also see the protral of “Your” black women in those videos as nothing more than fast hot women, and degrading..!” Get it together Kanye, that little commentary was nothin more than a PR campain to get your name out there so people will buy MORE of your CD’s and watch your videos!.

PS And instead of complaining on TV, get you “blank” out to NO and give a helping hand.. Remember, these are “your people”!
    Loopster!

  13. - I respect Kanye West for having the kohones to speak out as he did; people have been dying needlessly, because of a lack of leadership, poor communication and an absence of a chain of command, a dismal failure across the board. he was up front about feeling like a hypocrite himself, shopping before giving all he could to the cause. Clearly he felt passionately about it, and he had a rare opportunity to make his voice heard to a widwe audience that otherwise would not hear. Had he silenced his own voice and only read the canned NBC script, he probably wold have felt guilt afterward for not using that opportunity.

    - Re: #3, quaalude: West wears far, far less “bling” than hordes of other rappers (check out Lil’ Kim, or Puff Da– sorry, Puffy– sorry, P. Didd– sorry, Diddy…), and he made a strong statement that, before you go buying your bling, find out if you are buying conflict diamonds or ‘blood diamonds,’ which only puts money in the pockets of people who are profiting from other people’s suffering. And, quaalude, you can always buy a diamond from a reputable dealer who can verify the source of the stone. Many companies get stones from sources like Canada. they cost more, but you can wear them with a clean conscience. So, West puts out an intelligent album that’s *not* all about shootin’, dealin’, bitches & ho’s, and he makes a compelling enough record that lots of people across many different social groups like it and buy it. So he can afford to make sure he’s not buying conflict diamonds. And he tries to push his peers in the same direction. More power to him.

  14. After hearing Kanye’s comments stating that race is behind the slow response to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina I will no longer buy or support in any monetary way Kanye West or anything that is connected to him. It’s sad that a talented musician like himself has to stoop so low to try to stir up controversy by bringing up the “race card”.

  15. I was in Houston for TS Allison and FEMA still took a week to show up and start helping people. Most that were hardest hit were middle to upper class and most of them were White. The simple truth is that due to the size of our bureaucracy and the politics that takes place in it, it takes too much time for action. Our Government is failing us (that goes for democrats and republicans and whatever color they may be). And, in this particular case, we were failed by Congress, which did not provide the funds to make a stronger dam; Louisiana and New Orleans, for not effectively organizing a contingency plan; and FEMA for not opting out of the politics to do what everyone knew had to be done.
Believe it or not, all of this could have happened with Bush in a coma.

ps> If you do a little research, you will see that West is not well informed.

  16. I am utterly surprised that people are actually defending Kanye West and his statements. I am not surprised because of the statement itself, what surprises me is the blatent misuse of something many people have died for to protect.

There is no greater way to destroy a cause, discredit an idea, or completely discredit yourself than to make unfounded claims and sound uneducated. FireRabbit has a serious point, this was not a place to voice your opinions. These people were trying to use the only thing they have, fame, to raise money for the suffering people in the disaster area. How does it benefit the fund raiser to have a person blatently attack the nation and the president?

I assure you, there are much more eloquent ways of voiceing your opinions. When you come across as defensive, insecure, and almost violent, there is a side effect that is undesirable to the person speaking. That side effect is simply that people immediately get defensive, insecure, stubborn, and vehement in their expressions also. So regardless of the fact that Kanye sounded illiterate and irrational, his blatent misuse of the program is appalling.

It does not do well to blindly attack based upon ignorance and misinformation. I do not know the actual population distribution but last time I heard anything, I was pretty sure the population of New Orleans was almost entirely black, is it not? Regardless of the race, should it not be mentioned that the “looters” were shooting people themselves? Were they not using weapons against other Americans? There is a term in psychology called Dissociation of Self. Most people know this more commonly as “The Crowd Mentality.” Their behavior was beyond control and use of extreme force was probably necessary. They had guns and were using them. Frankly I would not want to be a police officer or National Guardsmen in that situation.

    That is merely my opinion…

  17. Kanye, the self proclaimed born again christian, has disgraced all christians with his outburst on NBC. He says he has found God? A christian wouldnt have used the words to discribe or attack an individual in a very stressful time. I can understand people are dying, but to throw racism into why people aren’t getting help fast enough is very ignorant.

Is it Bush’s fault that a majority of rescue teams couldnt leave earlier due to the fact that the storm caused damage in other parts of its path? Would it have been safe/smart to send caravans of help through the storm to reach New Orleans? Is it Bush’s fault that Roads entering the City were covered with fallen trees and paths needed to be cut? Is it Bush’s fault that bridges leading to the city were destroyed and uncrossable? Is it Bush’s fault that women are getting raped and cops are being shot? Is it Bush’s fault the city was built below sea level? Does it take time to organize and fund EXTREME disasters?

It seems that Kanye had caused bad publicity to sell records…is he a martyr by speaking his biased opinion? Should we make Kanye President? Kanye being the christian he says he is…..should understand that pretending to be a christian is the most sinful thing a christian can do!

  18. kanyeisignorant says:

There is only one word to describe Kanye West and that word is ignorant. He is a big idiot and should lock himself in a recording studio and never come out. He should stick to music instead of being a wannabe Martin Luther King. If anyone is to blame for what happened it should be the Gov of Lousiana. She had time to get everything she needed in place before this disaster hit, but she is obviously underqualified for her job. I do not know how Kanye put the blame on President Bush but I guess he’s just as racist as everyone else. I’d like to know how many multi-millions Kanye has spent on luxury items such as houses, cars, bling, wardrobes, etc… Then this disaster occurs and all of the sudden he cares about people? Thats wierd, i’ve never heard him voice an opinion on anything politically before, which is probobly for the best because he doesnt seem to know that much about anything. It pisses me off how everyone blames Bush as soon as anything bad happens, it just goes to show how most people are just as ignorant as Kanye West. He made is idiodic comments on a nationally publicized show raising money for the disaster and single handedly ruined the whole thing. It just goes to show that Kanye West does not thing before he speaks. It must be all the bling bling in his ear that keep him from hearing how much of an idiot he really sounds like. So to sum up everything, Kanye is an ignorant fool who should learn to keep his mouth shut about shit he has absolutly no idea what the fuck he is talking about. Fuckin idiot.

  19. Bush is not the racist. Kanye is. He is just so ignorant. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

  20. To the last four posters you guys are either fuck*ing hypocrites or down right blind. John you are specially full of shit!!! How in the world can you say he is not Christian? Let me give you a history lesson “son”. As I seem to recall Christianity is based on this man named Jesus’ teachings who’s two greatest commandments are love your God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself. Encompasses a lot doesn’t it? Love is a verbe you going around talking religion critizing people who have the balls to stand up to authority is all fluf no action. Same with GWB all fluf and the only action is lining his pockets with more money.
Jesus’ knew God like nobody else and bashed religious hypocrites like GWB all the time. It cost him his life because wicked rich religious people couldn’t stand to be shown up by someone who the “working” people could have true faith in. I believe Kanye being convicted by God’s spirit, it’s not easy and you could see it in his demeanor when he said what he did. He had nothing to win by it, probably a lot to lose. We all know what happens when you fight back for the poor ala MLK, RFK, and Lincoln. But Jesus is with this man no matter what self serving assholes say. He’s not a sell out. You are! You sold out to a notion of god which makes life comfortable in your rich upper class world and explain all the poverty, violence, and terrorists away while going around and playing church and “saving souls”! Ha! You’re only interested in saving yourself. You can call it Chrsitianity but it’s not! Make no bones about it if Jesus were to come back today as he did last time your would reject him just like you do Kanye West. What God wants? If it was a losing effort would you still believe in the spirit of Good? The spirit of God? Oh Lord! How long do we sing this song?

Matthew 21:19 tells us Jesus cursed a fig tree: “Let there be no more fruit from you forever. And the fig tree immediately dried up.”

Trees in the bible often represent religious systems created by men.

  21. To John:
Is it Bush’s fault that he turned down help from both Canada and Venezuela that could have helped prevent so many deaths? Yes.
Is it Bush’s fault that he cut taxes that would have gone to supporting the advancement of the leevies so that they wouldn’t have broken? Yes.
    To Hola:
You have just as much proof that Kanye is a racist that others have of Bush’s racism.

  22. Responding to Bobby: Blunt but, uniformed, and otherwise, looking stupid.

Responding to Joris Willems: I can tell you have not been tuned into all the activity in the US by the Christian groups and communities all over pouring their money, time, and energy into caring for the people of MS, AL, & LA. That’s the difference between Republicans and Democrats - Republicans believe in people taking care of people, and Democrats believe in the government taking care people. And as far as shooting goes, it only pretains to the idiot hoodlums that looted for profit. And to your point about West being a critic that deserves protection, (”wire his mouth shut”)if he is going to act irresponsibly by making brash comments (to get air time and sell cd’s as someone said earlier) then he needs to be properly informed. West pulled out the race card, yet no one seems to look at the first responder, mayor Ray Nagin, and apply any blame to this man. Is it because he is black and it is beyond him to not do his job and take care of people in his city. Including, most of all, african americans, since he is one. Does anyone realize that W had to persuade Nagin and Blanco to call for an evacuation because they were not doing their job! Does you realize that W cannot go into a state withouth permission by the Governor, which W was asking for permission and waiting for the go-ahead. Nagin and Blanco failed miserably, yet no one seems to see this. Why? Because the main stream media wants to blame this one W instead of seeking the truth.

Responding to Fig: Matthew 21:19, I beg to differ about your analogy. The tree dried up because Jesus had the power to make the tree dry up and he made it known that he could do this. It symbolizes not being fruitful with what GOD has given to each and everyone of us as our gift. I do not believe it have anything to do with religious systems created by men.

Finally: West is a part of the whole whether he planned it that way or not - I chose “not” I think he just stumbled into this one. If anyone will chose to look W has embraced diversity more than any other president and you can see this by the people he has brought into his cabinet. The democrats say that are the party of diversity but they do not live or show it. I think the people on this blog need to do some more research using other resources than the ABC’s, NBC’s, CBS’s, and CNN’s of the world.

    Enough said.

  23. Kanye West is a liberal idiot and anti-american, so is anyone who agrees with him. After Kanye’s rant about the President and the U.S. government being racist, I re-assessed my opinion of ole Bush and our government. Guess what, Bush now has my support. Thanks Crybaby Kanye!. New Orleans has the highest murder and crime rate in America. The majority of the criminals are black. Is that racist? It’s fact, sorry folks. After the storm hit, who told all the “poor blacks” to loot and shoot? Did Bush? Did the U.S. government? No, they chose that behavior.
To blame others for your failures is weak and a cheap cop out. Blacks as a whole need to start taking responsibility and stop whining. They have many blessings in this country that they choose not to take advantage of. No one, I repeat no one is entitled to anything and no one owes you anything. Once you accept this life will be much easier in some ways.
The sad part of this is that people sling the word racism around like a bat. When people say things, such as what I am writing, that are not popular or readily accepted it is labelled as “racist”. It’s a shame. We have become a nation of whining, spineless, crybabies. Damn, I can’t believe that there was not one “man” among those healthy young dudes. All I heard on t.v. was whining and complaining. Enough already and “Do something!”

  24. Kanye is an opportunistic 2 bit punk. I laughed out loud when the little boy began to tremble as he struggled to put together one coherent sentence during his Red Cross rant. Leave the politics to the politicians. Entertainers need to know that when they wander off track they risk offending half of their audience. The thinking half anyway. I wonder how much his selfish prank cost the Red Cross recovery effort? It is clear that Mr. West only sees things in black and white. I don’t see even a hint of “Jesus Walking” in his hateful, vacant eyes. Mr. West, we are a nation under seige by nature and by a ruthless enemy. Your childish
jab at our Commander in Chief gives aid and comfort to our enemies.
We are not black or white, we are AMERICANS. This homo just ain’t buyin Kanye’s crap.
“Any man who calls himself and American and something else, does not deserve to be called an American at all.” Abraham Lincoln

  25. Cry me a River!! says:

Does a so called Christian judge people,, like Kayne West did? Matter of fact,, how so egotistical to say that you are beter than others by labeling your self as a christian. So what was KAyne Wests point anyway..Because If he is a so called christian, than he would’nt be standing there on national television starting racial problems. I know very well that now there will be alot of tension cause of that stupid speech( If you want to call it that)AS a gay person,, I could say well pres bush doesnt like gay people either, but how idiotic would that be,Im not that dumb, when one is suppose to be there to unite people of this nation, not segregate and to help the Red Cross. How could anyone praise someone like him is beyond me. Must be there chance to speak there racism as well. Kayne West is self centered By the way,,all white people aren’t living in an upper rich class,, and i got to ask you,, DO you love thy neighbor?? cause you sure aren’t sounding like you do. You like to quote the bible?? Maybe you should practice what you preach.

  26. “Not Racist” — your monicer is as ironic as Kanye West crying racism, when he’s the one looking at everything in black and white. At least most of the posters here aren’t buying into his and your B.S. Maybe the sqeaky wheel gets the oil on college campuses and MTV reality shows, but reasonable people are getting really tired of your type of tirades and tantrums. Johnny Cochran’s dead, so lets give the race card a rest!

  27. To all you ig’nint………thats right…….ig’nint…(so you can understand)….Kanye West supporters that posted.
First of all….what the fuck was he saying at that telathon? I know i’m not the only one that couldnt understand a word coming out of his mush mouth other than GW doesnt like black people. Guess you can’t expect much more from a college dropout.
Yes hes entitled to his opinion……but NOT in that forum.
Has Kanye not learned from the Dixie Chicks? Enjoy getting black balled my brotha………your career is taking a nose dive as i type this.
Thats right left America……blame GW AGAIN. Don’t you know that he has the magical power to summon the winds and rain over the ocean, directing it’s path over the gulf states. Blame him for all the damage it did as well. Because….you do realize that all the shitty things within this world is GW’s fault. You looking to place balme? Look no further than the current and past mayors of N. Orleans, along with the govs of Louisiana. How long did you know that your city couldn’t withstand a hurricane over a category 3? YOUR CITY WAS BUILT BELOW SEA LEVEL DIPSHITS! That hurricane was seen coming a week out….and still they did nothing. NOTHING! I guess you were blind by corruption in a city that rivals Columbia in crookedness.
And being a racist is a term that has been so abused over the years by many a black leader in this nation. Look who you have as representatives for yourselves. al sharpton, jesse jackson? carl mack?. and the latest….kanye west.
    Man….if i were black…i would be ashamed.
It’s to the point that the word racist is watered down and has the rest of America rolling their eyes. Those that cry wolf overshadow the cases out there where racism does take place…and justice is not served. So if you want to aim your anger at something……aim it at those that throw that word around loosely. Many of you need to get that ass off the couch and take responsibility for yourselves. My tax dollars are tired of paying for those that abuse the system.
Do you really think GW really gets up in the morning….looks himself in the mirror…and says…”lets see….how can I fuck with African Americans today?”
If any of you really don’t like America and think that this country is so bad and unfair…..please do us all a favor and transplant your ass to France. That way you can all gather over there with all those other ig’nint beret wearing asses….and bitch about the greatest country on earth over wine and cheese.

  28. Conservative Minded says:

I don’t believe that Kanye’s comments actually changed anyone’s mind about the money that they would donate. People that are willing to donate usually ignore the comments from both sides of the extreme.

Most of the damage done to the fundraising effort was (in my opinion) done by the mainstream media. He summed it up correctly saying that the blacks were shown as “looters” while the whites were shown as “looking for food”. Although with the sheer amount of donations I think his impact was nil.

    However thinking that the Government
(and I assume you meant the Federal
Government) intentionally reacted slowly because of race is outright foolishness. It perpetuates the race problem.

Feel free to attack the Mayor for failing to force a mandatory evacuation until 20 hours before the storm. The city’s evacuation code calls out that they need 72 hours for a complete evacuation. Fault him for failing to provide buses to the masses that needed to evacuate. Did you see all the busses under water on TV?

Lets also jump onto the Governor for being so STUPID as to wait 24 hours before putting the National Guard in place and then she did it without a “clear cut” objective.

Both of these people were members of the State and Local Government. And to make you happy one democrat and one republican.

Lets hit the Levee Board of New Orleans. Why do they own a casino? It was no secret that the levees were only rated for a class 3 hurricane. It was news last year when New Orleans dodged the bullet from Hurricane (I believe) Andrew. One year later and they own a Casino and not a new Levee? Why?

Now about FEMA. Do you know what FEMA was actually created to do? They are under the Homeland Security division of the Federal Government and intended to assist in coordinating the efforts of the State and Local Government after the disaster. When there is inaction at the local level then FEMA has no ability to do anything. They have no military to command. How many employees do you think that department has?

Let’s also focus for a bit on the FACT that Katrina’s destruction covered 90,000 square miles (five states). Why should all the media focus on New Orleans? Because ongoing tragedy makes a better story than aftermath and cleanup.

I do think it was a racist story on the television but only because they made it about the crime and violence. Did you follow up and find out that most of the rape and murders that were supposed to be occurring every few minutes still haven’t been reported to the police. Why has that not been on the Nightly News?

I think that the race story in this tragedy is that people from all backgrounds are trying to come together and help one another as AMERICANS. The people who have “agendas” are trying to use this for political advantage. I knew it would get down to politics eventually even 9/11 did. The people who are benefiting from the segregation in America didn’t even wait until we could finish cleaning up the mess.

The Family from New Orleans that my Church is hosting is neither Democrat or Republican. We are helping because they are American. Faith without works is dead.

Oh by the way did you hear the President last night? Jobs will be coming to New Orleans. Anyone who wants to work will be entitled to work for their money. More importantly the Mayor said today that his city is now crime and drug free and he wants any displaced citizen to know that when they return they will be expected to keep it that way. What the devil intends for harm, God will turn to good.

  29. I didn’t know monkeys could talk…
