The Mozilla Foundation released Firefox 1.0 today! My congradulations and thanks go out to the entire Firefox team as well as all the other people who contributed to mozilla.org in any way.

I ask any IE user that comes across the page to give Firefox 15 minutes of your time. Try tabbed browsing, try the download manager, try the popup blocker, and if after 15 minutes you still want to use Internet Explorer, well, so be it.

I feel I should take this as an opportunity to explain why I have been so pro-active trying to get people to stop using Internet Explorer. Aside from the fact that I truly believe it is the superior product, Microsoft is currently under the impression that becuase they control basically the entire browser market they can do whatever they want. Internet Explorer has had no major update in several years with the exception of countless security patches because Microsoft doesn’t need to update it. It doesn’t support half of the features of CSS, which was released in the mid-90s, and why should they? People continue to use Internet Explorer as it is, without complaining, leaving Microsoft free to do (or not do) whatever they want.
I believe Firefox, as well as all the other open-source browsers will change this. If Microsoft starts to loose a large amount of marketshare (and I believe they will start to after today) they are going to have to say “oh shit” and start actually doing something about their browser as well as change their attitude on web standards.
Join me and the hundreds and hundreds of other developers who want the return of a free and open internet - spread the word about Firefox, Safari, Konqueror, or even Opera. The time to take back the web is now!
