Gentoo Changes

I noticed the Gentoo team made some neat changes to portage and baselayout:
First off they changed the format of the network configuration file, so if you recently sync’d and emerge’d world and are wondering why your networking failed to start this could be why..:
$ cat /etc/conf.d/net
ifconfig_eth0=(

Halloween offensive to real witches.

This certanly could be the most ridiculus thing i’ve seen, uh, well this month.
School District Bans Halloween

PUYALLUP - A local school district is banning Halloween parties because children dressed up as witches might be offensive to real witches.
Apparently our concept of “witches” comes from a religion called “Wiccan“. The Wiccans are upset because they [...]

Apache Webserver - Domain Controller Authentication

One of the huge annoyances at work is every internal system having it’s own user database, apache webservers being no exception. In light of this I figured out how to get apache to authenticate against an active directory domain using samba, winbind, and pam.

Installing vtun on ubuntu

Well it sure was easier to get this thing working on here than it was to get it working on clarkconnect:
1. Download & Install vtun
$ wget http://debian.yorku.ca/debian/non-US/pool/non-US/main/v/vtun/vtun_2.6-3_i386.deb
$ sudo dpkg –install vtun_2.6-3_i386.deb

This will install all dependencies automatically.

More mirrors are at: http://packages.debian.org/testing/non-US/vtun
2. Load the tun module

$ sudo modprobe tun

3. Add tun to /etc/modules so it will be [...]

Installing vtun on clarkconnect

I’ve been setting up vtun tunnels to friend’s local networks to play around with linux routing. A few of them are using ClarkConnect routers. It’s not nearly as easy to get vtun working on clarkconnect compared to Gentoo, which involves entering the very complicated “emerge vtun” command and watching everything just work, but I managed [...]

Linksys Sucks

I spent at least 5 hours today trying to get a wireless network working for someone with no success. The original issue was they had a computer at the opposite end of the house than the AP and wanted to be able to use it on their new broadband. The AP was an ACTIONTEC DSL/Router/Access [...]
