If I had a nickle for every time Windows screwed up….

…well, I guess I still wouldn’t have enough money to purchase a license, but that’s beside the point.

So after I accidentally stepped on the one extension cord that everyone’s computer was plugged into at my LAN party the other night the Windows XP installation inside vmware that I do all my Meshwork development in decided it would stop booting, but rather bluescreened during the boot processes then promptly rebooted half a second later.

Using my lightning quick reflexes and the print screen button I managed to snap a picture the error:

A quick google search found this Microsoft knowlege base article. From the article:

CAUSE
A file critical to system initialization, such as Smss.exe,
may be missing or corrupted.

A file crtical to the system initialization, such as Smss.exe, may be msising or currupt? So it might be smss.exe, but it might be any of the other 3,500 files needed to boot windows? The article doesnt even say it applies to Windows XP, however it gives a great solution for Windows NT: reinstall Windows NT to a separate directory. For Windows 2000 users it suggests using the recovery console to recover that one file not mentioned anywhere in the error message causing the system to fail. Thanks alot Microsoft.
