Linux!

So I finally gave up trying to fix the MSI service, moved my data off my primary harddrive, and did a repair install of Windows. Everything worked great, booted up to a desktop and everything. Amazingly when I attempted to install something buit with MSI it gave me an error saying H:\ was not found! I had disabled my IDE harddrives in the BIOS just to make absolute sure that I wouldn’t accidently fry them so it was correct in saying that the drive didnt exist, but I have no idea why it would want it.

Soooo I re-enabled the IDE controller in the BIOS and whatdayaknow windows wouldnt boot! As soon as it attempted to boot Windows the computer would just restart. I tried disabling the IDE controller again, still no luck. By this point I had just had it with Windows so I got out a Gentoo CD, stuck it in, formatted the drive, and after having much trouble getting my SATA and network controller to work, had a perfect Gentoo install, complete with Gnome 2.6 and dual monitors.

I got sound working but it sounded like crap, staticy and absolutley no bass or trebble. I spent about two hours in #alsa/#gentoo/on google before I realized that the input wire was only half-plugged into the back of my computer. Plugging it in all the way fixed the problem nearly as quickly as making me look like a dunce.

In the past I haven’t been able to last in a linux-only enviroment for very long but I’ll so how things go this time. I determined that the only Windows-only programs that I use are Visual Studio.NET 2003 and Macromedia Fireworks MX 2004. Monodevelop is an excellent .NET IDE for Gnome that I’m using to write the Linux Meshwork client, and there’s GIMP, but I dont like it all that much, maybe Fireworks will run in WINE?

Well I might as well stop talking since nobody ever reads this anyway, but I have to say that unless something drastic happens soon I hope to be Windows-free for a while.
